Humility Corresponds to the Highest Love
Maximum detachment means maximum liberty. Maximum liberty means maximum greatness. At Gethsemane, the Father took over the will of Jesus. With his total surrender into the hands of the Father, Jesus was left with nothing: he had no disciples, no friends, no fruit of his labor, no fame, no blood, no life... He was left with nothing. If he had nothing, he had nothing to lose; he was the freest man in the world because he was the poorest man in the world. That is why he bore himself with so much greatness and freedom in the scenes of the Passion. What can disturb one who has nothing and refuses to possess anything?

If John says that, ultimately, all measures of love were fulfilled in Jesus, that was because the greatest humility means the greatest love; that, too, is what happens in fraternal communion.
Jesus went through the scene of the Passion wrapped in silence, dignity and peace because he had emptied himself completely; he had swept out of himself even the dust of his own image. He was total Purity. By being so humble, he bore himself with greatness. In the end he loved us immeasurably because he had reached the utmost emptiness and humility.
In order to he able to love, one needs to be poor and to empty oneself as much as possible. This is the most concrete and efficient way of preparing oneself for a beautiful fellowship.
From the book “Come with Me” by Father Ignacio Larrañaga
