Mother of God
The changeless doctrine of the Church teaches without equivocation that Jesus Christ is the Son of Mary. In the way that any mother takes care of the fruit of her womb, Mary was in charge of the human nature within her, with which the Word of God was identified; and the fruit was Jesus Christ.
Let us proceed to examine the scope and meaning of the dogma solemnly declared by Holy Mother the Church at the Council of Ephesus. They defined that Mary was not only the mother of Christ in so far, He was a man, but also was the mother of Jesus in so far as He was the divine Word of the Father. That was the crowning jewel of the first Marian truth proclaimed with such joy in Ephesus on that day in the year 431. The Word is her Son and Mary is His mother, in the same way as all mothers are completely mothers of the whole child.

That means that this flesh that the Word assumed was “made” by the direct creative power of the Holy Spirit, and not by any normal biological process. And so, the dogma (and the Scripture) moves forward affirming that this creative operation of the Holy Spirit is realized concretely “in” Mary and “of” Mary. In summary, in this process of generation, the Holy Spirit is mysteriously the agent Who calls forth His creative potency emanating directly from divine power of the Most High God.
